Getting There

  • Ferry from Kuala Besut Pier to the island leaves almost every hour. This should cost you approximately RM70 (both ways). They will tear off half the ticket on your ride into the island and let you keep the other half of the ticket for your exit ride out (Don't loose it).
  • Overnight busses direct from Kuala Lumpur - Kuala Besut Pier from Putra Station (next to Putra World Trade Centre & The Mall). Bus companies that go direct are Mahligai & Perdana Express. Usually leaving at 8:30pm and arriving at 5:00am.
  • From Penang bus station- Mutiara Express
  • Overnight Trains leave KL Sentral station bound for Tanah Merah Station daily. This is the best way to travel as RM50.00 would get you a nice air-con bed with a pillow and blanket. This ride does take longer than the bus, but toilet is not a problem, there's a 24 hour cafe on the train, smoking areas are available PLUS you get a good night's sleep. This ride should get you to Tanah Merah Station (less than an hour's taxi ride to Kuala Besut Pier) before 9.00am.
  • Direct trains in from Singapore are also available on a very similar schedule to the one coming in from Kuala Lumpur.
  • Flying in - many make the mistake of booking their flights to Kuala Terengganu because The Perhentians are in the state of Terengganu. Kuala Besut Pier however is only approximately 50 minutes away from the Kota Bharu airport while it would take you approximately 2 hours if you were to come in from the Kuala Terengganu Airport. Be Warned!!!
Always my choice to take the overnight train from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. WHY?
  • IF YOU'RE TAKING THE FIRST FLIGHT FROM KL you'd have to wake up at 4am to get from your house to KL Sentral, a 1 hour bus from KL Sentral to LCCT airport (which you'll have to get to at least 1 hour before flying). Then take the 1 hour flight, then take a 1 hour drive from Kota Bahru airport to Kuala Besut Pier.
  • IF YOU TAKE THE BUS you'd have to take a 9 hour bus ride from Putra Station and the buses are usually too cold, the corners are not smooth corners to take (so you'd be rocking around a fair bit) and you'd reach the pier at around 5am in the morning. You'd have to sit around in the dark and wait for the first boat into the island at around 730am. This is your best option on a budget and it really isn't bad.
  • Although THE TRAIN is a 12 hour ride, RM50 will get you a bed, blanket, pillow, aircon, toilet, smoking area, a cafeteria...and it leaves from KL Sentral. So jump on the train...sleep in comfort (really long sleep)...and when you get to Tanah Merah (60 km from the pier) in the morning...you'd be so fresh and ready for a full day ahead!
